Bios of Teachers: 

Dalia Carella is a renowned world fusion artist, choreographer and instructress that specializes in both Near/Middle Eastern and Contemporary Dance Theater.  She is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Dalia Carella Carella Dance Collective. Dalia was invited as a guest choreographer for both Adelphi College and the University of Kentucky.   Ms. Carella has delved deeply in the studies of dances from the Near and Middle East as well as North Africa including Morocco and Algeria. Her dance background also includes studies in Flamenco, Indian, Afro-Haitian, Salsa, Bomba and Plena from Puerto Rico as well as jazz and ballet.  Her dances are both traditional and contemporary with a spiritual and mystical essence behind each and every dance that she creates. Her numerous concerts and teaching tours have led her throughout the United States, Canada, England, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Switzerland and will be teaching and performing in Japan, 2009.  Dalia and the Collective has been presented in New York City at the Duke Theater, Here Theater, La Mama, PS122,  Alvin Ailey and Adelphi College.

 Special Guest Teachers:

 Pooja Narang, Founder and Artistic Director of Bollywood Axion, is a globally renowned Choreographer.  Pooja has studied the classical forms of Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi dance. This Punjabi girl had Bhangra in her roots from childhood and studied the complete traditional and acrobatic form of Bhangra in Punjab, India. To continue her artistic quest, she also poured herself into exploring jazz and hip-hop in London,U.K. and explored other ethnic styles of movement, while maintaining a stylistic foundation in the expressive beauty of Indian dance. With some training by renowned choreographer Saroj Khan and in addition to having taken dance at the Shiamak Davar Institute of performing arts, Pooja has brought her years of experience and her visionary style of dance to the New York City and all over the world.   Pooja's choreography, & her dance company, "The BAX Dance Co." has given stellar performances at numerous events including the New York Times first screening premiere of Slumdog Millionaire in 2007, CBS Early Show, The Todays Show, Tyra Banks Show, Brooklyn Museum of Arts, Queens Museum of Arts,  Premio Lo Nuestro a la Musica Latina (Latin Grammy Awards) 2009 and so many high profile events. Bhavani Lee is a multi-faceted performer/choreographer who is deeply rooted in the traditions and interconnections between mind, body, and soul.  Raised an ashram in upstate New York, Bhavani was nurtured by the universal practices of yoga and meditation.  Beginning with the study of classical Indian Kathak dance at the age of five, Bhavani took quickly to forms of expression that include flamenco, contemporary dance, martial arts, and theatre. She has since trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC and with dance masters in India, including Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt. Satya Narayana Charka, and Smt. Maya Rao.   Bhavani’s recent work has included choreography and dance for fashion shows, film, and theatre, including a touring role as a principal dancer and performer in the worldwide production of Cirque du Soleil’s Dralion. In addition to her performance work, Bhavani teaches a variety of workshops in classical Indian dance, movement, yoga, and meditation for a variety of organizations and groups, including Omega Institute, Jivamukti Yoga School, and Lotus Music and Dance.  www.bhavanilee.com

Wednesday - June 3 - 11:00-5:00 pm.
 
11-1:30 pm  - Dunyavi Gypsy (Roman) Dance - Learn this style from the Creator of this Dance since 1983 - a tapestry of Turkish Roman, and Spanish Dance movement. Skirt and Footwork technique will be explored and a choreography will be developed using Turkish 9/8 karsilama rhythm.
 
2:30-5:00pm. - Turkish Roman   - Technique, Feeling and Choreography (without skirts)
Focus will be on traditional Turkish Roman hand gesturing, foot work, musicality and the feeling behind each and every movement that is imperative when dancing in this genre. Turkish Roman music will be used and a breakdown of the rhythms to educate dancers on how to interpret the music.
 
Thursday - June 4 - 10:30- 3:30pm.
 
10:30 - 3:30pm. - Danse Orientale Choreography: Passion, Theatricality and the Art of Being Sassy!
 
This choreography will depict Dalia's flair and signature style she used and still uses when performing Danse Orientale.  This dance will focus on bringing out every student/dancer's personality, skill and talent utilizing strong floor and space design, dramatic timing and sensual movement that personifies this art   Rooted in Near and Middle Eastern Dance (Danse Orientale),  Dalia's movement vocabulary in this style is an exploration of  traditional movement and an exploration into the Contemporary. 
 
Friday - June 5 - 11-5:00pm.
 
11-1:30pm. - El Mundo - a fusion of Latin and Afro-Caribbean, Arabic & Spanish Dance- Created in 1985 by Ms. Carella, a vocabulary of movements and footwork will be taught and combined into a short combo and choregraphy of  Fiery Skirt Work, Fan Techniques,  Arms and Posturing.   Please bring a fan that opens and closes.  If you need information where to buy, please email.  Bring a skirt without slits on the sides.
 
2:30-5:00pm. - Bollywood taught by Pooja Narang - is one of the hottest dances around!  It is the basis of every great Indian Bollywood Film. The dances are a fusion of traditional and classical Indian dances with the influence of some jazz, hip-hop and modern dance.  Timing and Rhythm, energy,  and sharp controlled expressive movements are the ingredients to becoming a Bollywood Dancer!  The Bollywood movements you will learn in this workshop are influenced by some of Indian's top Bollywood films.
 
Saturday - June 6 - 12-6pm.
 
12-2:30 pm. Arabica/Latino (no skirts needed) - a fusion of Belly Dance, Salsa/Cuban Son.   Movements and combos will be blended and fused together to create a firery and high energy dance. Dance Shoes are recommended or you can take this class barefoot as well.  Music fusing both Arabic and Latin Rhythms will be used in this class.
 
3:30 - 6:00pm. -Moving Mudras - Kathak Dance - Kathak originated in the Hindu temples of North India in the 13th century BC.  The word “Kathak” comes from the Sanskrit, “Katha”, meaning “to tell a story”, and the original Kathakas would use dance and music to bring to life the great scriptures and epics of ancient times.  Centuries later, the Mughal king’s enticed dancers from the temples to the royal courts, where the dance was enriched by Persian influences. The workshop will focus on the Theory of Kathak, basic foundation of traditional Kathak dance, Mudras (divine hand gestures), Abhinaya (expression), lines of the body and God and Goddess poses.
